A model of an optical biosensor detecting environment

Heller et. Al. (Science 311, 508 (2006)) demonstrated the first DNA-CN optical sensor by wrapping a piece of double-stranded DNA around the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CN). This new type of optical device can be placed inside living cells and detect trace amounts of harmful contaminants by means of near infrared light. Using a simple exciton theory in nanostructures and the phenomena of B-Z structural phase transition of DNA, we investigate the working principle of this new class of optical biosensor from DNA by using the nanostructure surface as a sensor to detect the property change of DNA as it responds to the presence of target ions. We also propose some new design models by replacing carbon nanotubes with graphene ribbon semiconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Accepte

Edgeworth Expansion of the Largest Eigenvalue Distribution Function of GUE Revisited

We derive expansions of the resolvent Rn(x;y;t)=(Qn(x;t)Pn(y;t)-Qn(y;t)Pn(x;t))/(x-y) of the Hermite kernel Kn at the edge of the spectrum of the finite n Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUEn) and the finite n expansion of Qn(x;t) and Pn(x;t). Using these large n expansions, we give another proof of the derivation of an Edgeworth type theorem for the largest eigenvalue distribution function of GUEn. We conclude with a brief discussion on the derivation of the probability distribution function of the corresponding largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOEn) and Gaussian Symplectic Ensembles (GSEn)

Universal Parametric Correlations of Eigenvalues of Random Matrix Ensemble

Eigenvalue correlations of random matrix ensembles as a function of an external perturbation are investigated vis the Dyson Brownian Motion Model in the situation where the level density has a hard edge singularity. By solving a linearized hydrodynamical equation, a universal dependence of the density-density correlator on the external field is found. As an application we obtain a formula for the variance of linear statistics with the parametric dependence exhibited as a Laplace transform.Comment: 23 pages, late

An Anisotropic Ballistic Deposition Model with Links to the Ulam Problem and the Tracy-Widom Distribution

We compute exactly the asymptotic distribution of scaled height in a (1+1)--dimensional anisotropic ballistic deposition model by mapping it to the Ulam problem of finding the longest nondecreasing subsequence in a random sequence of integers. Using the known results for the Ulam problem, we show that the scaled height in our model has the Tracy-Widom distribution appearing in the theory of random matrices near the edges of the spectrum. Our result supports the hypothesis that various growth models in (1+1)(1+1) dimensions that belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class perhaps all share the same universal Tracy-Widom distribution for the suitably scaled height variables.Comment: 5 pages Revtex, 3 .eps figures included, new references adde

EXPRESSION OF HUMAN PROTEIN C IN MAMMARY TISSUE OF TRANSGENIC MAMMALS

Recombinant protein C characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic mammals that incorporate DNAs according to the present invention. Transgenic mammals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes protein C, such that the DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature mammals and inherited in normal, mendelian fashion

Ray helicity: a geometric invariant for multi-dimensional resonant wave conversion

For a multicomponent wave field propagating into a multidimensional conversion region, the rays are shown to be helical, in general. For a ray-based quantity to have a fundamental physical meaning it must be invariant under two groups of transformations: congruence transformations (which shuffle components of the multi-component wave field) and canonical transformations (which act on the ray phase space). It is shown that for conversion between two waves there is a new invariant not previously discussed: the intrinsic helicity of the ray

Some Universal Properties for Restricted Trace Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary and Symplectic Ensembles

Consider fixed and bounded trace Gaussian orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, closely related to Gaussian ensembles without any constraint. For three restricted trace Gaussian ensembles, we prove universal limits of correlation functions at zero and at the edge of the spectrum edge. In addition, by using the universal result in the bulk for fixed trace Gaussian unitary ensemble, which has been obtained by Go¨\ddot{o}tze and Gordin, we also prove universal limits of correlation functions for bounded trace Gaussian unitary ensemble.Comment: 19pages,bounded trace Gaussian ensembles are adde

Ubiquitination of HIV-1 and MuLV Gag

AbstractOur previous biochemical studies of HIV-1 and MuLV virions isolated and identified mature Gag products, HIV-1 p6Gag and MuLV p12Gag, that were conjugated to a single ubiquitin. To study the importance of the monoubiquitination of Gag, a series of lysine to arginine mutants were constructed that eliminated ubiquitination at one or both of the lysines in HIV-1NL4-3 p6Gag and both lysines in Moloney MuLV p12Gag. HPLC and immunoblot analysis of the HIV-1 mutants demonstrated that either of the lysines in p6Gag, K27 or K33, could be monoubiquitinated. However, infectivity assays showed that monoubiquitination of HIV-1 p6Gag or MuLV p12Gag is not required for viral replication in vitro. Pulse-chase radiolabeling of HIV-1-producing cells revealed that monoubiquitination of p6Gag does not affect the short-term release of virus from the cell, the maturation of Pr55Gag, or the sensitivity of these processes to proteasome inhibitors. Experiments with protease-deficient HIV-1 showed that Pr55Gag can be monoubiquitinated, suggesting that p6Gag is first modified as a domain within Gag. Examination of the proteins inside an HIV-1 mutant found that free ubiquitin was incorporated into the virions in the absence of the lysines in p6Gag, showing that the ubiquitin inside the virus is not initially brought in as a p6Gag conjugate. Although our results establish that monoubiquitination of p6Gag and p12Gag is not required for viral replication in vitro, this modification may be a by-product of interactions between Gag and cellular proteins during assembly and budding
